There’s a lot of speculation surround Channing Tatum and his
acting abilities. Some say he’s the best thing to happen to acting since
Brando. Others say he’s alright but he’s no RDJ (there can only be one, after
all). Don’t forget the haters that would rather rip their own throats out over
watching a movie that he’s in. But no matter which direction you swing, you
have to admit, his success has been incredible.
So incredible that he’s managed to land
a role as Gambit in the next X-Men flick. Before everyone freaks out and
gives their two cents, let’s remember the last Gambit. He wasn’t bad, but
Gambit isn’t from Texas. He’s also a bit of a decent sized guy - not exactly small but not Colossus. Now, the
apprehension comes with Channing’s ability to put the moves on the smooth talking
New Orleans bad boy.
Let’s recap. He’s from that part of the country and has
reported having several friends from New Orleans while also spending some
hardcore time out there. He’s probably got the accent on lock – it’s just a
matter of whether or not he can maintain the accent. Fingers crossed on that
one. After all, The Eagle was three
years ago.
He’s got the moves to fit into Gambit’s repertoire of
kickass fighting styles, and the look on his face usually screams that he’s
about to break someone’s neck or get into some serious trouble.
Honestly, I think he can do it. He’s just going to have work
very closely with director and read up on his Gambit. From a fan girl
standpoint, he’s got the looks. That might actually make the producers really
happy to see the entire front half of the theater packed with women who would
otherwise mock their friends, boyfriends, partners, or anyone else who liked
comics. Welcome to the fandom, ladies.
Overall, it’s a smart decision on the part of Fox to get him
while they could. Whether the gamble will be worth is something the fans are
going to decide; but I’ll give him a thumbs up for the part. Now producers, don’t
wreck the script.
